When you think of a hippo, you generally imagine a large, grey blob. But watching this individual bob its head in and out of the water, I began to perceive something more: Notice the stark contours, the well defined, angular eye-sockets and the rough texture of the skin at the back of the head. There’s more to hippos than meets the mind-less eye, much as anything ordinary becomes extraordinary when we take time to observe consciously and without prejudiced thought.
